CBD and the Immune System

CBD - supporting the immune system in the age of COVID-19

In these times of deep tension due to the COVID-19 virus, in addition to clearly respecting the anti-contagion regulations, it is necessary to increase the immune system to prevent and make the human body more resistant to any type of external agent that can weaken our body and those of our loved ones.

Times like these when colds and flu are prevalent aren't the only reasons why we should try to improve our defenses. We should focus on building our immune system throughout the year so that we can survive these virus spreads.

Traditionally, a healthy lifestyle with sufficient consumption of vitamins and minerals is considered a recipe for good immunity – but let's not forget that CBD is also a natural medication for our health.

We already know that CBD has great therapeutic potential. According to the latest research, CBD can affect the function of the immune system. Cannabinoids, like CBD, are known as immunomodulators. This means that cannabinoids have a regulatory effect on the immune system by acting through the endocannabinoid system.

From the bio-chemical point of view, the properties and benefits of CBD, as a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, are incredible: it binds to CB2 receptors, which are found on T cells of the immune system and at the level of the central nervous system. The stimulation of CB2 receptors appears to be primarily responsible for the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory action of cannabinoids. Because CBD works as an anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressant, it may not be a necessary immune supplement choice for a healthy person. But for those who have compromised immune systems or those with autoimmune disease, CBD can be an excellent choice for therapy or treatment. Those with compromised immune systems are the ones most susceptible to the novel coronavirus pandemic. Separately, other studies have shown that regular CBD use can increase white blood cell counts in immunodeficiency disorders such as HIV (which in many cases weakens our lungs, leading to bronchitis thus being under high risk to contract COVID-19) suggesting an immune-boosting effect.

Furthermore, CDB has already given extraordinarily positive effects for respiratory problems in terminal patients. Especially the elderly who, due to the effects of pneumonia, are the most exposed to the risk of COVID-19. By relieving the problems of the respiratory tract, it will be easier to ensure healing and decreasing the deadly effects of the virus.

Lastly, CBD is of great help in controlling problems related to anxiety, stress, depression, fear, sleep disturbance, and psycho-physical extremes that can increase in this period of uncertainty created by the spreading of the new virus. With some of the recommendations to self-isolate, self quarantine and practice social distancing, the stress and anxiety can definitely increase and increased anxiety can negatively effect and weaken the immune system of an otherwise healthy individual. CBD products like oil and capsules and gummies can help to mitigate this type of anixety and keep you calm during this difficult time and help with sleep as well. If you aren't already, now is a great time to start a healthy daily CBD routine as we collectively go through this crisis.

In terms of the virus itself, prevention is, of course, the most important thing at the moment, and CBD can be a part of it as it can have a positive effect on our immune system and thus help to reduce the risk of contracting this disease. Stay safe.
